Mayens de Riddes in summer
The area around Mayens de Riddes is huge and known for its usually good weather. Mayens de Riddes (La Tzoumaz) lies in a green valley - the Rhone Valley - and the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful and varied. "La Tzoumaz" comes from the French word "tzoumer", which means pause. The village is ideal in for those seeking tranquility and want to unwind. La Tzoumaz is located at the end of the mountain pass which makes it a quiet village as a final station without al lot of traffic.
Les Quatre Vallées is one of the largest ski areas in Europe, but it also offers a range of sights, relaxation options and natural beauty in spring and summer. Beautiful hiking trails can be made over the mountain meadows and mountain slopes. Fishing in the freshwater lakes, a visit to the vineyards, a trip to the dam or a visit to the climbing forest in Sion; there is something for everyone.
The historical monuments of the Valais landscape include the so-called "bisses" (Sentier des Bisses) since the 14th century. These irrigation canals are open slots that spread the water over the grasslands, vineyards and orchards. Many hiking trails along these historic canals invite visitors for varied walks along the way. One of them runs steadily up the mountain slope behind our apartment complex. Definitely worth following this through the landscape and forests.
After a few hours walking downhill through the alpine meadows you reach Isérable, a flower village situated vertically against a mountain wall with its specifically historically preserved characteristics.
If you want to exert yourself, you can walk uphill to even the top of Mont Fort at an altitude of 3.300 m via various higher mountain paths and mountain lakes. Flora and fauna there are unparalleled. The top of Mont Fort can also be reached by lifts.
At the tourist office you can get a map showing all the walking routes in the area for different levels, light, medium and difficult. It is also possible to book (in advance) an overnight stay in a mountain hut (La Cabane)..
Those looking for more of a challenge can rent a mountain bike or scooter in La Tzoumaz or Verbier and descend along a pre-defined route of a total of 45 km. You will then be taken to great heights with the lifts - even to just below Mont Fort - and then descend to the place of departure. Mountain climbing and parasailing are also practiced in the high mountains.
